RSS Feeds

What is RSS?

RSS, which stands for Real Simple Syndication, is a content distribution format used by web sites to publish and deliver content as it becomes available.  A web site can have one or more RSS feeds that you can subscribe to, allowing you to be notified once new content is made available on that web site about a subject area you´re interested in.  For example, if you subscribe to the “Regional News - Africa” RSS feed on the MI site, you will be notified every time a new article is published relating to our work in Africa.  The main benefit of subscribing to RSS feeds is that, instead of having to constantly revisit a web site to check for updates, the updates are delivered to you as they become available.  There are several different ways to subscribe to RSS feeds and, regardless of what subscription method you choose, using RSS can help you save time while keeping you up to date.

How can I subscribe to the MI RSS feeds?

Email

To subscribe to an RSS feed using email, click on the “Subscribe via email” link for the RSS feed that you are interested in.  Enter your email address and complete the form.  You will receive an email from Feedburner, a service that MI uses to deliver RSS feed content via email, asking you to confirm you email address. Once your email address has been confirmed you will receive an email whenever new content is published, up to a maximum of one email a day per feed.  You can unsubscribe to this service at any time and neither MI nor Feedburner will use your email address for any other purposes.

Outlook

To subscribe to an RSS feed using Outlook, right click on the “Subscribe” link and select “Copy Shortcut”. Go to Outlook and go to the Tools menu and click Account Settings.  On the RSS feed tab, choose New and paste the web address that you copied into in the News Feed dialog box and choose Add and OK. The RSS folder appears in the main menu just below your inbox and new posts will appear in bold, similar to an unread email message.

Web Browser

Many web browsers, such as Internet Explorer and Safari, allow you to subscribe to RSS feeds.  To subscribe to an MI RSS feed, choose the “Subscribe” link and then click on the orange RSS icon that appears in your browser (for IE, it appears in the menu at the top right) and follow the instructions provided by your web browser.   Updates will then be made available through your browsers Favourites or Bookmarks folder.

RSS Reader

There are many freely available tools that allow you to subscribe and manage RSS feeds.  These include tools such as Google Reader and Bloglines. Google has compiled a full list of all available applications.   Once you have set up your RSS reader, you can subscribe to an MI RSS feed by using the “Subscribe” link and copying and pasting the web address from the address bar (e.g. http://feeds.feedburner.com/micronutrient/news) into your RSS reader.
