Asia: Improving the Effectiveness of Community Volunteers
Nepal continued to demonstrate great success through using its network of Female Community Health Volunteers. These volunteers, working under the supervision of public health personnel, achieved both coverage of a high proportion of eligible children, and worked to help identify an appropriate mechanism for delivering low dose vitamin A capsules to night-blind pregnant women. MI provided the capsules (as part of a package of services for mothers) and supported training of the community health volunteers) in some of the worst affected districts.
As a result of our work and that of our many partners in south Asia , some 128,000 child deaths were averted in Bangladesh , Pakistan and Nepal alone. |
